What makes a good speech? How do you deliver a good speech?

This page has some tips and video clips (to which students can add more!) on the HOW: What to do.

WHAT TO DO:
  • when hearing the opposition and you have a point to make, but you aren't the next speaker, write your comment/rebuttal on note paper (will be provided) and give it quietly to your team's next speaker: they will use it as part of their rebuttal
  • focus on providing evidence toward your motion, and always sum-up at the end on how it relates to that motion
  • become less dependent on your notes, and be aware of 'how' you deliver your evidence and argument, it is just as important as what content you give

  • A debate scene from a movie called "The Great Debaters": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mRuNcGDPzA8(Set in 1935 Texas, at the time of the Great Depression and glaring racism towards the African-American community, a group of Wiley College (all-African American institution) debate students and their mentor face off against predominantly 'white' colleges in a series of debate competitions: a snippet of a scene where two debate teams argue the motion "Negros should be admitted to state universities").
